A 61-year old Maryland woman was in critical condition after she was attacked in a Macy's parking lot. Authorities say the victim was assaulted and robbed outside the store's entrance and that they are still searching for a suspect in the case, ABC affiliate WMAR reports.
Police believe that the woman was attacked around 6:30 p.m. and was knocked unconscious, but it was not until some time later that they were alerted about the incident. Originally her car was believed to be missing, but investigators were able to recover it.
Although authorities have yet to name a person of interest, Justin Mulcahy, a spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department told the news provider that "this investigation is still fluid but based on that information we believe it to be a robbery and an assault."
Individuals looking to reduce the risk of such an assault may want to take some safety precautions when walking in a parking lot. For starters, experts suggest to always carry keys and avoid talking on a cell phone. Additionally, pepper spray has proven to be an effective deterrent against an attacker.
