Police in Lincoln County, North Carolina, are looking for at least two men responsible for a recent home invasion. The four residents of the house were bound and tied while the suspects rummaged through the building, The Charlotte Observer reports.
Although the victims were not injured, the incident was a rather violent one. Police say that the men entered by kicking down the door and pointed guns at the family. At that point, they tied the victims' hands and legs and ended up taking cash before fleeing in the family's Dodge Durango - which was recovered about a half mile from the scene, according to the news source.
CNN reports there are a number of simple steps one can take to prevent such a home invasion. For instance, home safety experts advise against opening the door halfway with the chain latch still on as well as installing solid-core doors, heavy duty locks and window security systems.
In addition to taking preventative measures, homeowners may also want to consider buying pepper spray. Using the device against an attacker can temporarily disable him and allow a victim to get to safety.
