Canadian woman assaulted while delivering newspapers

A woman in Saanich, British Columbia, was attacked recently as she was delivering newspapers. Local police are looking for a man who allegedly pulled her aside and attempted to assault her while she was on an early morning route with her husband, the Times-Colonist reports.

Investigators say the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. as the 29-year-old victim came out of a local driveway while helping her husband with his job. At that point, the man grabbed her, but she swung the flashlight at him several times and he ran off into the bushes. Although the victim was physically unharmed, she was emotionally shaken, according to the news source.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were around 1.4 million instances of violent crime in 2009. Whether one is a mail carrier, newspaper delivery person or simply likes to jog in the early morning hours, buying pepper spray is a great way to boost personal safety. However, experts suggest practicing with the device first to ensure it is used properly if the need ever arises.
