Dog attack leaves victim's family, landlord fuming

A family and their landlord are looking for answers after a 3-year-old old girl recently suffered serious injuries from a pit bull attack. According to NBC affiliate WSAV, the two are calling for stricter laws that will prevent such an incident from occurring again.

The anger stems largely from the fact that the dog that attacked the child had been in the custody of animal control twice not long before the incident. Additionally, the landlord, Elaine Anderson, claims to have alerted authorities about the presence of some aggressive animals near the building and professed that she was concerned about the safety of children, but nothing was done.

"I thought that it was taken care of," she told the news source. "I thought that was the end of those dogs running free but that wasn't the case."

People who live near aggressive canines may want to consider purchasing some animal repellent in the form of pepper spray. The device has been proven to make it difficult for a dog to see and breathe, and can prevent such attacks from happening.

Attack of Massachusetts woman stirs up personal safety concerns

Police in Chelsea, Massachusetts, are feverishly searching for a suspectcharged with brutally beating a woman. The victim was attacked and left for dead. Authorities were called after neighbors heard her cries for help in the early morning hours, Fox affiliate WFXT reports.

The attack is believed to have taken place a little before 2 a.m., and police have said that the 24-year-old victim sustained significant life-threatening injuries and remained in the hospital a day after the assault. There were not many witnesses available to provide details, except for one man who claims to have witnessed almost the entire thing.

The man, who lives near where the attack took place, told the news source that he and his parents saw a man pull what appeared to be a pipe or crow bar from his vehicle and repeatedly strike the victim. After seeing the incident take place, the man called police, but the suspect fled the scene before police arrived. Investigators are hoping that any other witnesses will come forward so they can collect as much information on the suspect as possible.

A recent survey conducted by the Justice Department in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that there are a surprising amount of similar incidents across the country. The study found that approximately 1.9 women are victims of assault each year in the United States. Additionally, about 15 to 25 percent of American women report a sexual assault at some point in their lives.

Despite the threat, there are a number of effective personal safety tips that can help lower one's risk of being the victim of a similar attack. For starters, safety experts from the National Crime Prevention Council say that the most effective way to stay safe is to avoid having to walk alone late at night. Similarly, individuals should make sure they park in well-lit areas that are visible to other people, stores and walkways.

Furthermore, staying alert can prove to be effective as well. Many professionals suggest removing headphones and getting off the phone to ensure that one is aware of his or her surroundings as much as possible. As a final precaution, making eye contact with any suspicious people is suggested, as it can deter them from targeting a person.

For those seeking an added boost to their personal safety, pepper spray has proven to be an effective choice. When used correctly, the device can make it difficult for an attacker to see and breathe, which will allow a potential victim to get to safety. However, those who decide to buy pepper spray should be familiar with how and when to use it.

"I don't care if you carry an ink pen, pepper spray, Taser or bazooka, you have to get the muscle memory down," safety expert Steve Kardian told East County Magazine. "You must practice."

Along with being able to practice, those who buy pepper spray should take several other facts into consideration as well. Firstly, consumers should check the expiration date on the bottle - most devices last between 2 and 3 years. In addition, the spray should be kept in an easy-to- reach location, such as a keychain, so that it can be used quickly if the need ever arises. As a final step, experts recommend checking the local pepper spray laws.

Texas police looking into confounding home invasion

Police in Corpus Christi, Texas, are investigating a mysterious home invasion that left a couple unconscious and curious for answers. The residents had a number of undisclosed personal belongings stolen from their house, CBS affiliate KZTV reports.

The home invasion occurred when an intruder knocked on the door around midnight. When the door was answered, the robber struck both the residents in the head with a shotgun, and neither of them woke up until the following day.

"It's possible that the male victim knew the subject, and he forced entry after that and was assaulted with a shotgun," Lieutenant Anthony Sanders told the news source.

There are a number of steps homeowners can take to prevent such an attack. Keeping the entrance to one’s home well-lit and not answering the door for an unidentified individual will help safeguard home security.

Additionally, carrying pepper spray can bolster one’s home safety as the device is able to temporarily disable a potential attacker. Experts suggest practicing with the device to ensure it is used correctly if the need ever arises.

Arrest made in connection with Florida assault

Police arrested a man in Neptune, Florida, who was involved in a brutal attack on a woman in a motel. The man is facing a slew of charges stemming from an incident in which he allegedly held a knife to the victim's throat, the Asbury Park Press reports.

Investigators say the incident occurred in mid-January, and the man, 35-year-old Michael Kyles, is suspected of holding a knife to the victim while he assaulted her. Kyles allegedly made threats on the woman's life, who sustained lacerations between her middle and ring finger.

For those who like to go out walking, personal safety is of the utmost concern. Experts say that there are a number of ways to reduce one’s chances of being attacked. Chiefly, walking with one’s head up and striding with a purpose will help reduce the risk.

Those looking for an extra safety boost will want to buy pepper spray. When used correctly, the device can make it difficult for an attacker to see and breathe, allowing for a victim to escape to safety.

Illinois police shoot two dogs after attack on woman

Police in Evansville, Indiana, recently shot and killed two dogs after they attacked a woman. Authorities are still looking for two other dogs who were also involved in the mauling, The Associated Press reports.

The woman was walking near a park when the pack of dogs approached and knocked her to the ground. A group of bystanders noticed the melee and called the police. Authorities arrived on the scene and a pair of the animals were killed.

The victim, who was a 48-year-old woman, sustained many bite wounds across much of her body, though none of her injuries are life threatening, police told the news source.

If a dog seems ready to attack, experts suggest remaining motionless with arms at one’s sides while avoiding eye contact.

Those who are concerned about an aggressive dog in their neighborhood may want to consider taking a step to protect themselves by buying pepper spray. When sprayed into the face of a canine, the spray will make it difficult to see and breathe and can be an effective animal repellent.

Connecticut woman taken to hospital after home invasion

Police in Milford, Connecticut, are on the lookout for a pair of men they believe broke into a woman's home and assaulted her. Though the victim suffered no serious injuries, she was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, the Connecticut Post reports.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. when the duo knocked on the victim's door and asked if they could use her phone. She attempted to turn the men away, but they forced themselves into the home and began their raid. The news source reports that the men then rummaged through her bedroom before leaving the scene.

There are a number of practical ways to boost home safety. For starters, using the peep hole every time someone knocks may seem like common sense, but it can go overlooked. Additionally, ensuring that one has a strong, solid door is the best defense against a home invasion.

Being prepared in the case of such an intrusion is important as well. Having pepper spray in a residence is an effective way to bolster home safety, as it can make it difficult for an attacker to see and breathe.

Octogenarian attacked from behind in New York parking lot

An elderly woman in East Rochester, New York, recently suffered a broken hip after she was attacked in the parking lot of a local grocery store. The attacker knocked her down and stole her wallet, and police are still searching for the suspect, ABC affiliate WHAM reports.

The incident took place in broad daylight at around 2 p.m. Police told the news source that the woman was struck from behind while she was pushing a shopping cart. They were shocked at the bravado of the criminal to attempt such an act where, and when, he did.

"Very bold move," East Rochester Police Chief John Tando told the news provider. "It was pretty decent weather [Thursday], middle of the afternoon, busy parking lot, to do something that brazen or that bold right then."

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were 16.9 instances of violent crime per 1,000 people in 2009. Those looking to avoid being a victim of such an attack may want to buy pepper spray. Experts suggesting practicing with it, however, to ensure it's used properly if the need ever arises.

Rash of dog attacks puts spotlight on pet safety

Dog owners in South Carolina are on high alert for their pets' safety after a pair of dog attacks have left other animals dead in their wake. Both incidents were the work of pit bulls, and according to The Post and Courier, police are still searching for the owner of one of the offending canines.

The first incident occurred when a pit bull mix lashed out and mauled a six-week old Labrador puppy. Police say that the puppy was in an area with many other dogs, but the aggressive animal singled out the young dog and dragged it under a table. Despite the efforts of the owner, the puppy died at the scene.

Mark Patrick, the man who operates the dog park where the attack took place, said that there are supposed to be designated areas for smaller and larger animals, telling the news provider that pet safety is "all about pet-owner awareness."

The second attack was the result of a pit bull that is believed to be responsible for at least four such instances around the Charleston area.

Pet owners who want to protect themselves and their pets from such an attack may want to consider carrying pepper spray. The device has proven to be effective at disabling dogs and allowing one to get to safety.

Man in England jailed after dog attack

A man in Staffordshire, England, was recently sentenced to three years behind bars for his role in a dog attack that left another man seriously injured. The two individuals had been in an argument, and the dog owner failed to call off his animal when it began the onslaught, BBC News reports.

What began as a dispute quickly escalated and the victim, Shaun Murray, sustained substantial injury to his skin due to puncture wounds. The judge in the case believes that the 25-year-old owner of the dog used his animal as a weapon.

"It is clear from what has been said to me that you had the power to call off this dog at any point and you did not do so," the city's sheriff Graeme Buchanan told the man, according to the news source. "The dog caused horrific injuries to the complainer."

Those who live near an aggressive animal may want to buy pepper spray to protect themselves. When used correctly, the device can compromise a canine's sight and ability to breathe, allowing victims to get away safely.

Woman attacked, stabbed inside Michigan home

Police in Macomb Township, Michigan, are on the lookout for a man they suspect attacked a 69-year-old woman. The incident left the woman with serious injuries after the assailant beat her and stabbed her twice in the neck, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Investigators have several leads, and have provided the public with a photo of a man they believe to be responsible. The attack occurred around 10 a.m., and police say that the man entered her home and she was able to call 911 despite suffering substantial injuries. Authorities are looking for a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, according to the news source.

Individuals looking for a way to bolster their home safety may want to consider taking several steps, including always keeping garage doors shut, installing deadbolt locks and avoiding leaving spare keys under welcome mats or other easily-accessible areas.

In addition to preventive measures, homeowners may also want to buy pepper spray to keep in their residences. When used correctly, experts say the device can disable an attacker and make it difficult for them to see and breathe.

Colorado woman attacked by two pit bulls

A 68-year-old woman from Arvada, Colorado, was recently attacked by a pair of pit bulls after she tried to protect her own dog. The unprovoked assault left the victim's pet with 18 puncture wounds on one of his legs, an injury which required more than 4 hours of surgery to treat, ABC affiliate KMGH reports.

The woman, Peg Wyman, was walking her 5-month-old puppy through her neighborhood when the two canines sprung the attack. The animals targeted her pet, and she threw herself over him to shield him from the onslaught.

However, the dogs turned their attention toward her. She was being dragged down a hill when John Torres spotted the situation and scared the dogs away.

"I'll love him until the day I die," Wymer told the news source. "I mean, he saved our lives. What can you say? He's my hero forever."

Those who are nervous about walking through a neighborhood with an aggressive dog may want to consider carrying pepper spray. The device has proven to be an effective animal repellent.

Experts look to reduce number of dog attacks

A growing number of public safety officials are becoming concerned with a rising number of dog attacks. Around 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs each year, HealthDay reports, and experts are trying to determine the best manner to protect citizens, especially young children.

What is especially troubling is that most attacks are not caused by stray animals, but rather are the result of an aggressive pet that may have gotten loose

One victim of such an attack is 18-year-old Kelly Voigt, who was seriously hurt at 7 when a neighborhood dog unexpectedly injured her so badly that she required more than 100 stitches to close the wounds. She has since started a child safety campaign to help give kids the knowledge to prevent similar occurrences.

"It affected me in such a big way that I just didn't want anyone else to get attacked like I did, so we decided to do something about it," she told the news source.

Runners, walkers and mail carriers often face aggressive animals as well. Carrying pepper spray has proven to be an effective way to improve safety as it can disable a charging canine.

Dog injures three in Virginia attack

A dog in Winchester, Virginia, was recently responsible for an attack that left three individuals injured, one of them seriously. The incident apparently sprouted from an argument between the three people, and the attack is the fourth such occurrence this year, Northern Virginia Daily reports.

Police who responded told the news source that the man who was most seriously injured was likely the co-owner of the dog. The 25-year-old victim was apparently bitten in the face and had to be taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The other owner of the dog, a 19-year-old woman, was injured, as well as a 20-year-old man who sustained bite wounds to his hand. Nobody has been charged in connection with the incident, but authorities took the dog into custody where it must remain for a 10-day period.

According to Dogsbite.org, an group that seeks to reduce such attacks, around 1,000 people require emergency treatment for dog bites in the United States each day. Those looking to reduce their chances of being bitten may want to look into buying pepper spray as an animal repellent. The device makes it difficult for dogs to see and breathe, allowing a victim to get to safety.

Chicago police issue alert after woman was attacked

A day after a woman in Chicago was attacked in the Wicker Park neighborhood, city police issued an alert urging local residents to be on high guard. Investigators are searching for a Hispanic man in his mid-20s who is about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The assault occurred around 6:15 p.m., when the 22-year-old was on her way home. Police say that she took a path through an alley after which a man approached her from behind and pushed her up against a gate. According to the news source, the victim was able to fight off her assailant, who then fled the scene.

The National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control recently conducted a survey and found that around 1.9 million women and about 3.2 million men are physically attacked each year in the United States.

One of the best ways to protect oneself from being the victim of such an attack is to buy pepper spray. Experts suggest carrying the device on a keychain or in an easy-to-reach location so it can be used quickly if necessary.

Oregon woman attacked, robbed near post office

A woman in Corvallis, Oregon, was recently attacked and robbed outside the local post office. Area police were still searching for a suspect several days after the incident and believe they are looking for a 40 to 50-year-old man with gray hair and a beard, the Corvallis Gazette-Times reports.

Police say that the incident occurred around 7 a.m., when the victim was getting into her car. She told investigators that a man came up from behind and struck her with a blunt object, which knocked her to the ground. According to the news source, authorities said that the man stole her purse and several other items before taking off.

The victim's purse was later recovered from the surrounding area and she suffered no life-threatening injuries.

Still, the incident raises the issue of being aware of one's personal safety at all times. The National Crime Prevention Council suggests taking steps such as carrying bare essentials and having one's key out at all times.

In addition to precautionary steps, individuals may want to buy pepper spray. The device has proven to be an effective way to disable a potential attacker and allow one to get to safety.

Lost motorist attacked with hammer

Marc Brown was lost and driving around Gastonia, North Carolina, but wrong directions were quickly the least of his worries. Two men attacked Brown after he stepped out of his car to help them, leaving him with several missing teeth and a concussion, NBC affiliate WCNC reports.

Brown became lost during the early morning hours when his GPS gave him wrong directions. He pulled over when a pair of men were signaling for help, but soon found himself in significant trouble after he got out of the car. He told police one of the men threatened to shoot him while the other attacked him with what was later determined to be a hammer, according to the news source.

"People use what's handy to them, whatever's available, whenever they decide to do an assault like that," Sgt. Jeff Clark with the Gastonia Police Department told the outlet.

Those who are concerned about falling victim to a similar fate may want to arm themselves with pepper spray to improve their personal safety. The device has shown to make it difficult for a potential assailant to see and breathe, allowing for a victim to get to safety.

Pit bull injures Illinois teenager as she loads her car

A woman from Murphysboro, Illinois, was injured recently when a pit bull attacked her from behind as she loaded things in her car. The offending animal, which belongs to a neighbor of the victim, was taken into custody and was placed under observation, CBS affiliate KVFS reports.

The attack occurred around 8:30 a.m. and began was the victim, 19-year-old Stephanie Volner, had her back turned. The animal bit her several times and cause some serious injury to her feet before a nearby witness, 59-year-old Hector Cano, came over and prevented the animal from inflicting any further damage.

"Mr. Cano heard the screams from inside his home," Sgt. Brain Brewer, with the Murphysboro Police Department, told the news source. "He came out and took action to go over and actually pull the dog off the victim."

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of hospitalizations resulting from dog bites has been on the rise recently, with an 86 percent increase between 1993 and 2008. Individuals looking for a way to protect themselves against a similar attack may want to consider carrying pepper spray. The device has shown to be an effective way to keep an aggressive animal at bay.

Police searching for man who attacked Florida woman

A woman in Orange County, Florida, was recently attacked as she walked around her neighborhood at night. The incident has area residents on edge and local police looking for a man described as being 5-foot-4 in his early 30s, Fox affiliate WOFL reports.

The incident took place around 11 p.m., and the 20-year-old victim told investigators that a man began following her as she walked from one house to another. The assailant approached the woman from behind and pinned her up against a wall. Her screams attracted the attention of nearby residents, causing the attacker to run off, according to the news source.

Personal safety experts say that one of the best ways to prevent such an attack is to make eye contact with suspicious individuals. Mary Ellen Burns, spokesperson for the Boston Police Department told ABC News that it "may scare off attackers because they fear you will be able to identify them."

In addition to taking preventative measures, those looking to boost their personal safety may want to consider carrying pepper spray. Experts suggest keeping the device in an easy-to-reach location so that it can be used quickly if necessary.

Judge rules pair of pit bulls are dangerous

Whether fair or not, pit bulls often have a reputation as being among the most vicious dogs around. A judge in Augusta, Maine, made the designation official for a pair of dogs to quell the fears of some other individuals in the area, the Portland Press Herald reports

The decision makes it so that two dogs, Jackman and Hebron, must be kept confined at all times or walked on a very short and strong leash, according to the news source. In addition to a fine, the ruling comes in the wake of an attack on a local llama by the two dogs that left area residents afraid of similar incidents causing harm to their pets, or themselves.

"It's peace of mind that the owner has to actively contain the animals," Monmouth, Maine, resident Nancy Smith, told the news provider. "Let's take this as a warning."

For other individuals who are concerned about being the victim of a dog attack, pepper spray can be an effective defense mechanism. The device has shown to be an effective way to disable an aggressive dog and can make it difficult for them to see and breathe.

Police: Trust instincts in dangerous situation

Police officers in Sioux City, Iowa, are making a push to promote personal safety, and one of them recently discussed the topic with NBC affiliate KTIV. There are a number of precautions one can take to maintain his or her well-being, but law enforcement officials say the most important thing to remember is to trust one's instincts.

The increase for discussions about personal safety stems from a recent incident where a woman was assaulted after a man kicked in her door. Police say that the homeowner tried to ignore it when the man pounded on her door but he forced his way in. Experts say she should not have ignored the situation.

"Get help coming right away, call 911 regardless of what's going on." officer Jeremy McClure told the news source. "If you feel like you're in danger get help coming get us notified so we can can get there and help you out as soon as possible."

Along with trusting instincts, one way to improve home safety is to use pepper spray. When used correctly, the device can make it difficult for an attacker to see and breathe, allowing a victim to get to safety.

Police still on the hunt for woman who attacked bus driver

Being a bus driver can certainly be a dangerous job, and that was no more evident when a woman attacked a bus driver in Oakland Park, Florida, during the fall. Although the incident occurred in October, police have been searching for the assailant for months after her image was caught on a security camera, Fox affiliate WSVN reports.

The attack occurred, police say, because the woman was upset that she was being kicked off the bus for not paying her fare. The woman appears to be between 25 and 30 with wavy black hair. After hurling several obscenities at the driver, 72-year-old Tassos Kastopolus, she took things a step further.

"She slapped me here, she slapped my glasses off; she broke my sun shades," he told the news source.

Bus drivers looking for a way to protect themselves from similar attacks may want to carry pepper spray with them while they're on the job. The device, which makes it hard for assailants to breathe and see, should be kept close at hand so it can be used quickly if the need arises.

Georgia man fights off would-be robbers with pepper spray

A man in Atlanta, Georgia, who has fallen victim to thieves multiple times in the past, is not planning on lying down anytime soon. Robbers had stolen Roby Dail's air conditioning units three times before, but this time he was prepared and hit them with pepper spray when they tried again, NBC affiliate WXIA reports.

The attempted robbery occurred around 3:21 a.m., when Dail heard the security alarm go off. He pursued the men, which is when he used the pepper spray. Dail used a video camera to film the entire ordeal.

"It had to hurt 'em," Dail told the news source. "They were struggling to see as they drove down the road."

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the rate of such crimes was about 134 per 1,000 households in 2008, and as Dail proves, pepper spray can be a very effective deterrent against criminals. For those who go out running or walking by themselves, experts say carrying pepper spray is a good way to improve one's personal safety.

Woman attacked in graveyard after being lured in

A woman who as lured into a graveyard in Bridgewater, England, was attacked upon entering the area. The victim went in to investigate what sounded like a woman screaming but was instead punched in the face by a male assailant, the Bridgewater Mercury reports.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m., and the 20-year-old victim was not badly hurt. Police are still investigating, and told the news source that although the attacker rummaged through the victim's belongings, it appears as though nothing was taken.

Authorities are also using the incident as an opportunity to offer a reminder about personal safety as the victim was likely fooled into entering the graveyard by the attacker.

"If you hear strange noises, do not investigate, but call the police," officer Miranda Elkins informed the news provider.

Along with not investigating strange noises, individuals may also want to boost their personal safety by carrying pepper spray. While it is an effective defense against an attacker, experts strongly suggest practicing with the device to ensure it is used correctly if ever has to be discharged.

Attacking tiger scared off by ladle-wielding wife

A man in Malaysia is lucky to be alive after surviving a vicious tiger attack, and he has only his wife to thank. His better half heard his screams and chased off the vicious feline after hitting it in the head with a ladle, the Malaysia Sun Reports.

The man, 60-year-old Tambun Gediu, was in the woods near his village hunting for squirrels when he ran into trouble. He stumbled across the tiger, which immediately attacked him and he had very little time to react.

"My first instinct was to climb a tree but the tiger pounced and started clawing me. I had to use all my force to push the tiger's mouth away from my face while shouting for help," Gediu told the news source.

His 55-year-old wife heard the commotion and approached wielding a ladle, and proceeded to hit the creature in the head, which caused it to run away.

Though few people will ever encounter such an animal attack, being prepared with repellent for aggressive creatures such as dogs may be a smart choice. Pepper spray has proven to be an effective way to keep an attacking canine at bay.

Georgia police continue personal, home safety classes

Police in Colquitt County, Georgia, are providing local citizens with the opportunity to improve their personal and home safety. The department is offering classes that teach attendees various tips on how to maintain their well being, The Moultrie Observer reports.

The course is available to anybody who resides in the county and is at least 21-years-old, and will be taught by veteran police officer lieutenant Jerry Green. The classes have been occurring regularly since last February, and focus primarily on realistic and effective ways for individuals to protect their home, themselves and their family.

In addition to practical knowledge, the class also teaches pupils about the correct and safe way to use defense tools such as guns, Tasers and pepper spray. It may be important to learn as well, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and the Justice Department, around 1.9 million women are assaulted in the U.S. each year.

Pepper spray has proven to be among the most effective ways for an individual to keep an attacker at bay. Experts recommend carrying it in an easy-to-reach location such as a keychain so it can be used quickly.

Australian toddler needs surgery after dog attack

A young girl in Urbenville, Australia, recently had to undergo surgery after being attacked by a god. The 2-year-old toddler was scratched in the face by a female whippet and the incident is still being investigated, The Northern Rivers Echo reports.

Local authorities say that the attack began when the girl walked into the room where the whippet and another canine were embroiled in a fight. The dog, apparently unprovoked by the victim, lunged at her and she sustained a two-to-three centimeter laceration on her face.

"Police were contacted by the doctor [who initially treated the victim] who said she was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for injury inflicted by a dog," inspector Bill McKenna told the news source.

According to Dogsbite.org, an advocacy group for preventing harm related to canine attacks, around 1,000 people in the United States are hospitalized each day due to such injuries.

Dog owners or those looking to stay safe from an aggressive dog may want to carry pepper spray. The device has proven to make it difficult for animals to see and breathe, allowing a victim to get to safety.

Police say the incident occurred later in the day and the homeowner was not found until the following morning by her neighbors. Investigators have not determined the exact time of the invasion, but believe that it happened at night.

It is also unknown whether or not anything of value was taken from the home, although the victim's car was stolen and later discovered by authorities. Police are waiting for her to recover from her injuries before looking for a description of the assailant.

"She's not able to be questioned at this time," sergeant Terri Smith told the news source. "At this point, they do not have a suspect. [Detectives] are continuing to follow leads in the investigation."

A fight at a high school basketball game in DeLand, Florida, recently turned so violent that police had to use pepper spray to keep the crowd at bay. The local sheriff's office said about eight fights involving up to 30 people each broke out after a game between DeLand and Spruce Creek high schools, CBS affiliate WKMG reports.

The incident took place in the parking lot after the game, police said, and it involved students from both schools. At first, the fight began as an argument but when a deputy assigned to the game attempted to escort one of the Spruce Creek students to his car, around 100 DeLand High students attacked him.

According to the news source, the deputy then had to use pepper spray to quell the violence and called for back up. However, it appeared to work as no injuries were reported and nobody lodged any complaints about the spray.

While pepper spray is an important of police officer's arsenal, it can also be beneficial for members of the general public as well. Experts say that those who decide to carry the device should do so in an easy-to-reach location.

Nebraska girl suffers serious injuries from dog bite

Two young girls in Nebraska were recently bit by the family dog, and one child sustained injuries that required hospitalization. The canine has been picked up by the Nebraska Humane Society as a dangerous dog and officials are looking for reasons why the attack occurred, NBC affiliate WOWT reports.

The girls were 10 and 11-years-old, with the younger of the two receiving the most serious wounds. The dog, a Chesapeake Terrier, bit her on the arm and caused several deep gashes. Although she faces a long road to recovery, doctors are hopeful that her young age will reduce the chance of any permanent scarring.

"Scars tend to disappear as they grow, as their skin remodels and so what a scar looks like from any cut six months from now is not what it's going to look like six years from now," Dr. Deegan said.

Detroit police offer personal safety class

In an effort to provide its citizens with education on how to boost their personal safety, police from Detroit, Michigan, are offering a class aimed at equipping attendees with the tools necessary to avoid becoming a victim of crime, The Associated Press reports.

While education is among the primary objectives of the class, officers will also be teaching a number of skills as well. For instance, police are expecting to instruct those in attendance how to safely use personal safety tools such as pepper spray, whistles and other self-defense techniques. Pupils can also expect to learn how to recognize signs of an attack, according to the news source.

While crime has been on the decline over the last several decades in the city, police are still keen on providing residents with the knowledge necessary to protect themselves as the crime rate is still well above the average for Michigan.

Although carrying pepper spray is an effective way to ward off a potential attacker, it is not effective if one does not know how to use it properly. Experts suggest practicing with the device to ensure that one knows how to use it if the need ever arises.

Pair of Ohio officers teaching personal safety class

After Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot at a public event earlier this year, many lawmakers and officials became concerned for their personal safety. In an effort to equip them with the knowledge to avoid such an incident, a pair of Ohio police offers recently shared some tips, NBC affiliate WCMH reports

The pointers are provided by veteran officers Tom Notturniano and Denny Palmentera, and are focused on giving people the ability to see and recognize potential signs of dangers. They maintain that a lot of the injuries at the Arizona shooting were due to the fact many people did not know how to respond.

"When you are put into a life and death situation, your brain is going to go to the last thing that you can think about to save your life: fight or flight, training and you'll hear police officers talk about that all the time," Notturniano told the news source.

Those who are looking for another way to boost their personal safety should consider carrying pepper spray. When discharged into the eyes of an attacker, the device can make it difficult for them to see and breathe and allow a potential victim to get to safety.
