A woman in Salem, Oregon, was attacked recently while out for a jog, and police are on the lookout for the man they believe is responsible. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., and the 26-year-old victim told investigators that a recent personal safety course helped her stay calm and avoid any injury, NBC affiliate KGW reports.
The victim told police that she saw her attacker before he approached earlier in her route, but he came up from behind her and grabbed her as she ran down a ramp. He tried groping her, but thanks to some quick thinking she was able to fend him off and alert authorities.
"The victim screamed and swung her elbow at the suspect, at which time he fled and was last seen southbound on River Road from Wilson Street South. The victim was not physically injured and went to a nearby business where she contacted police," Lieutenant Dave Okada told the news source.
In addition to being prepared mentally like the victim was, joggers may also want to buy pepper spray to boost their personal safety. Experts suggest keeping the device in an easy-to-reach location so that it can be used quickly if ever necessary.
