Dog attack leaves Canadian woman needing surgery

A woman from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, remained in serious condition days after being attacked by an aggressive dog behind a building along the town's Main Street. The 45-year-old victim sustained wounds to her face, upper torso and neck in the March 26 incident and had to undergo hours of surgery to repair the damage. Responding officers were able to shoot and kill the dog after a brief struggle, The Chronicle Herald reports.

For the owner of the dog, it is not the first time one of his pets has been involved in such an attack. Nearly three years ago, neighbors of the man described a scene in which another victim was seriously injured by a pair of pit bull-like canines. No charges were filed as a result.

"The poor man, he was bitten from head to toe...like somebody took an axe or an ice pick to his whole body," one witness told the news source in 2008.

Though any dog can become aggressive, DogsBite.org reports that pit bulls tends to be responsible for the majority of serious incidents. According to the organization, which is a group dedicated to reducing the number of such incidents in the United States, about 1,000 people require emergency care every day to treat a dog bite. Additionally, of the 88 deaths recorded between January 2006 and December 2008, pit bulls were responsible 59 percent of the time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, of the 4.5 million Americans bitten by dogs each year, children, adults males and other dog owners are the most vulnerable. However, experts say there are a number of ways individuals can prevent dog attacks.

The CDC recommends that parents teach their kids several tips to avoid injury. Chiefly, children should not approach unfamiliar dogs as they tend to be the most unpredictable. Furthermore, if one ever finds oneself in a position where a canine seems aggressive, the CDC suggests remaining motionless and resisting the urge to run, as that may only exacerbate the problem.

For families that are considering bringing a dog into their home, the group also offers some pet safety tips. For starters, spaying or neutering a dog will help reduce aggressive tendencies, and families should never leave infants or young children alone with the pet.

Still, there are some who may be looking for a more substantial way to protect themselves if they happen to come across a potentially aggressive dog. Pepper spray is not just an effective means of personal safety against humans, but it can work on animals too, and can be the perfect defense mechanism for joggers, postal workers or anybody else who may come across a dangerous situation.

While there are a number of animal repellents that offer protection against dogs, pepper spray is considered to be one of the most effective. Perhaps the biggest advantage offered by pepper spray is that it can be used from far away. While other repellents require an individual to get close, most pepper sprays are effective at distances up to 10 feet and provide a strong stream that will temporarily disable a dog.

When carrying pepper spray, experts suggesting keeping it in an easy-to-reach location such as a keychain so that it can be used quickly. Additionally, one may also want to practice with the device beforehand so that if it ever needs to be used, it's done so correctly.

Runner in England attacked in daylight

A jogger in Marlow, England, was recently attacked in broad daylight, prompting police to release a composite sketch of the man they believe to be responsible. The early-evening assault left the 45-year-old victim uninjured, and investigators are still trying to determine a motive, the Maidenhead Advertiser reports.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when the victim and her husband were going for a run together. Authorities say the suspect grabbed the victim's hair and pulled her to the ground as she and her husband ran through a path connecting two streets. Upon hearing his wife's screams, her husband turned around and put at stop to the assault.

"The area is a route used by lots of runners and dog walkers and I'm confident someone would have seen the person," police chief Richard Martin told the news source. "I urge anyone with any information to contact me."

Joggers looking to boost their personal safety while out for a run may want to buy pepper spray. When discharged into the face of an assailant, the device will temporarily disable them, allowing a potential victim to escape.

Arkansas woman needs surgery after dog attack

A woman from Little Rock, Arkansas, was recently bit more than 25 times by a pair of pit bulls. Twenty-two-year-old Brenie Jordan had to be hospitalized after the dogs charged at her while she was walking down an alley, CBS affiliate KTHV reports.

Police say that Jordan was walking past a local residence when she saw the two dogs in an unfenced area. Investigators say Jordan had to be taken to a local hospital and remained there for at least six days, projecting that the recovery process could be a lengthy one.

"I had to have plastic surgery done on my foot," Jordan told the news source. "They cut down to the tissue. I have a lot of bite marks all the way up to my knees."

According to a recent study conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of hospitalizations for dog attacks rose significantly between 1993 and 2008. Those looking to prevent becoming a victim may want to buy pepper spray as an animal repellent. When sprayed into a dog's face, the device will make it difficult for them to see and breathe.

Young Indiana girl suffers vicious pit bull attack

A five-year-old girl from South Bend, Indiana, was attacked by a pit bull recently and suffered extensive injuries that required surgery. The animal nearly tore the victim's right ear off, and the girl was still recovering several days after the incident, Fox affiliate WSJV reports.

The victim was the granddaughter of the pet owner's girlfriend, and police say that the man was aware that the dog was potentially aggressive. Additionally, he did not have the necessary liscences for owning a dangerous animal. According to the news source, the dog also did not have its rabies shots up-to-date and was euthanized.

DogsBite.org reports that around 1,000 people are hospitalized due to canine attacks each day, and that in 2009, a study found that 59 percent of fatal dog attacks were caused by pit bulls.

Those looking to protect themselves from being a victim of a dog attack may want to buy pepper spray. When aimed at the face of an animal, it will make it difficult for them to see and breathe, allowing the user to get to safety.

Woman attacked by four assailants near Seattle park

A woman in Seattle was attacked recently while walking near Woodland Park. Police say the woman was seriously beaten with a stick and a bat and also suffered a knife wound to her forehead. Investigators are still looking for the two men and two women they believe are responsible, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.

According to the victim, the attack happened around 8:35 p.m. when she was grabbed from behind by one of four assailants who punched her in the eye. Soon after, a second suspect with a knife cut her across the forehead, at which point she dropped to the ground to protect herself.

As she lay on the ground, police told the news source that the two other suspects kicked, stomped and beat the victim. Investigators are looking for two men and two women of Hispanic descent between the ages of 18 and 22.

Those looking for a way to boost their safety while out by themselves may want to buy pepper spray. However, one should be sure to check state laws regarding the device, as they can differ from place to place.

University of Minnesota police teaching personal safety

Police at the University of Minnesota recently handed out free donuts, but it was the information that came with the delicious pastries that was much more important. The officers doled out personal safety tips as part of a larger campaign urging students to maintain their well-being, the Associated Press reports.

The event is part of the Stand Up campaign, which has focused primarily on encouraging students to be aware of their surroundings and to be vigilant if something doesn't seem right. Previous weeks have included discussion on high-risk drinking, but the most recent endeavor was aimed specifically at personal safety.

In addition to handing out donuts, police are also hanging up fliers, posters, social media and other attention grabbing signs reminding students what they can do to stay safe, according to the news source.

Those looking for an added boost to their personal safety may want to buy pepper spray. Experts recommend carrying the device in an easy-to-reach location so that it can be used quickly if if the need ever arises.

Pepper spray used to break up post-wedding fight

What was supposed to be a day of celebration turned to chaos in Gilbert, Arizona, when a recent wedding reception became violent. Police had to use pepper spray to quell the altercation, and the fight could result in charges being filed against at least two of the people involved, The Arizona Republic reports.

The first call to police came in around 8:30 p.m. with reports of around 30 people fighting on the dance floor in the backyard of a nearby home. There had apparently been a disagreement that escalated quickly. A lone officer arrived on the scene, and after discharging pepper spray, he called for backup. Despite the fight, the groom had nothing but good things to say about the authorities who responded.

"The police did a great job," he told the news source. "No one was injured. No one was arrested. This is something we need to move on from and live our lives."

As this situation proves, pepper spray can be an effective way to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation. For members of the general public, pepper spray is an ideal personal safety device and can temporarily disable an attacker.

Jogger fends off attacker in Oregon

A woman in Salem, Oregon, was attacked recently while out for a jog, and police are on the lookout for the man they believe is responsible. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., and the 26-year-old victim told investigators that a recent personal safety course helped her stay calm and avoid any injury, NBC affiliate KGW reports.

The victim told police that she saw her attacker before he approached earlier in her route, but he came up from behind her and grabbed her as she ran down a ramp. He tried groping her, but thanks to some quick thinking she was able to fend him off and alert authorities.

"The victim screamed and swung her elbow at the suspect, at which time he fled and was last seen southbound on River Road from Wilson Street South. The victim was not physically injured and went to a nearby business where she contacted police," Lieutenant Dave Okada told the news source.

In addition to being prepared mentally like the victim was, joggers may also want to buy pepper spray to boost their personal safety. Experts suggest keeping the device in an easy-to-reach location so that it can be used quickly if ever necessary.

Rise in dog attacks has Missouri residents concerned

A spate of dog attacks in Fulton, Missouri, has city officials looking into changing animal control policy. The city council recently met to discuss the growing problem after a young boy was bitten by a pit bull just several days earlier, CBS affiliate KRCG reports.

While some residents have suggested banning notoriously dangerous dogs such as pit bulls, others don't think that will entirely solve the problem. It's not just people who are being injured by the animals, but other dogs as well. One such pet was Mickey, a the pet of Fulton resident Donald Beauchamp, who saw the entire incident happen and is concerned for other residents' pets' safety.

"The pit bull was on the corner of my house and the dog had latched on to my dog's left ear and neck and was actually trying to rip his neck off," he told the news source.

Pet owners looking to keep themselves and their four-legged friends safe may want to buy pepper spray or animal repellent. When sprayed into the face of an attacking animal, the device will temporarily disable it, allowing a potential victim to get away.

Gas station attack highlights importance of personal safety

A Clinton Township, Michigan, woman was attacked and robbed while at a gast station, and although police arrested one of the men believed to be responsible, they are still searching for another. The incident left the woman shaken while a man who tried to come to her aid suffered a broken jaw, Detroit Local News reports.

The assault began when the woman was inside the gas station and two men grabbed money from her purse. After she threatened to call the cops if the money was not returned, one of the men came in and handed back her cash. However, as soon as she stepped outside, the attack began again. The victim said one of the men hit her in the jaw and then turned their attention to her friend.

"His jaw is broken in two spots," she told the news source. "He's in the hospital."

Police managed to arrest one of the men, Michael Corlone Williams, but are still looking for his accomplice.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, although the rate of such crime has been on the decline over the last several years, it is still at a significant level. In 2009, there were about 16.9 incidences of violent crime per 1,000 people over the age of 12 in the United States. Of that number, 2.1 per 1,000 are robbery.ies.

To prevent being a victim of a similar attack, the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) suggests a number of different ways to maintain one's personal safety. For starters, the NCPC recommends that individuals should avoid making themselves a target. Specifically, one should not display cash, cell phones or any other electronics that might make one attractive to a potential thief.

In addition to not drawing attention to oneself, there are a number of common sense tactics that are helpful as well. For walkers and joggers, experts suggest only going out during the time of day when the streets aren't completely empty - this means avoiding the early morning and evening hours.

Furthermore, the NCPC advises parking in well-lit areas and reminds individuals to always have their keys out as they approach their vehicles.

One of the most popular and effective ways to additionally boost one's personal safety is through the use of pepper spray. Though many know that the device can make it difficult for an attacker to see and breathe, most may not be aware of how it works or the best ways to use it.

The key component of pepper spray is the oleoresin capsicum (OC), which is the active ingredient in most chile peppers. When it comes into contact with the eyes, throat and nose, OC can cause immediate tearing, temporary blindness and respiratory restriction. By temporarily disabling a potential attacker, pepper spray allows a victim to make a safe escape.

However, knowing how the device works is just the first step. Like any skill, using pepper spray correctly requires practice. Experts say that users should be familiar with aiming before ever having to use it in a real life situation. Where the device is carried should be considered as well. Keeping it in a location such as a keychain makes it easy to use if the need ever arises.

As a final precaution, those considering pepper spray should be familiar with their state's laws regarding the possession of the device. Some states, such as Massachusetts, require a particular license before pepper spray can be carried, and others have stringent guidelines about where pepper spray can be purchased.

Canadian woman attacked in early morning bus stop assault

Police in East Kildonan, Canada, are looking for a man they believe assaulted a woman at a bus stop. Investigators are asking for any potential witnesses to come forward and provide information as to the identity and appearance of the assailant, CTV News reports.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. while the 34-year-old victim was waiting for the bus. Authorities say that the man approached her, struck her with a bottle and knocked her to the ground. Once he had her on the ground, he continued the assault and began choking her until some passing motorists saw what was happening and stopped.

According to the news source, when some drivers exited their vehicles to see what was happening, the suspect pretended to be helping the victim. However, she was able to break free and call police.

Safety experts say one of the best ways to protect oneself from being the victim of an assault is to buy pepper spray. It is also recommended to carry the device in an easy-to-reach location so that it can be used quickly if the need ever arises.

Texas home invasion leaves police looking for suspects

A mother and daughter in Corpus Christi, Texas, were the victims of a home invasion recently. However, despite breaking into the residence, the burglar did not take anything, leaving police confused as to his motives, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports.

Police arrived on the scene at 5:26 a.m., and the woman told investigators that a gunman entered the residence when she opened the door, thinking it was her mother. According to the news source, the man forced his way into the apartment and threatened to shoot the woman and her daughter if they did not comply. After rummaging through some of their belongings, the man left without taking anything.

Home safety experts recommend a number of ways to prevent such an invasion from happening. For starters, homeowners should always use their peep hole before letting someone in. Additionally, investing in heavy duty locks and a solid core door will prevent someone from barging in.

Those looking for an added boost in home safety will want to buy pepper spray. The device can turn back an intruder by making it difficult for them to see and breathe.

English boy's quick thinking prevents robbery

A 12-year-old boy in Bristol, England, managed to thwart a would-be burglar thanks to some quick thinking and a cool head. Police arrived on the scene and arrested the 19-year-old intruder before he could take any valuables, the Bristol Evening Post reports.

The attempted robbery occurred around 2 p.m. when Tyler Wilson was home alone waiting for his brother to come in. When the burglar broke in, Wilson fled to a spare room, grabbed a phone and called his mother, who then alerted the authorities. Soon after, police arrived on the scene and apprehended the suspect while he was trying to take the family's television.

"I saw that the guy was outside trying to get in, but he didn't see me," he told the news source. "I don't remember being too scared - I just thought, I have to phone mum and hide, and not make any noise,"

Those looking for an effective way to boost their home safety may want to buy pepper spray as added insurance. While installing heavy duty locks and solid core doors is a good start, having pepper spray at one's disposal will help prevent injury should there be a break-in.

Canadian boy attacked by sled dog

A young Canadian boy was recently injured when he was attacked by a sled dog. The incident occurred in Southend, Saskatchewan, and the 4-year-old victim had to be taken to the hospital with serious injuries to his face, CTV News reports.

The attack happened while the boy and a caregiver were tending to 14 sled dogs inside a reserve. Although the boy was told to stay inside the truck, he wandered outside and encountered an animal off of its leash. According to the news provider, the dog bit him and ran off before it was hit by a car.

"The dog ... did inflict some injuries on the youth before the care-giver was able to separate the dog from the child," sergeant Paul Dawson told the news source. "His injuries are serious but not life-threatening."

Those living in the neighborhood of an aggressive canine or looking to protect themselves against a dog attack may want to buy pepper spray or animal repellent. Such devices have proven to be an effective way to disable a dangerous dog and will prevent similar injury.

Florida man arrested after samurai sword attack

Police in Zephyrhills, Florida, arrested a man recently after a bizarre domestic disturbance. Investigators say the suspect, David Barber, attacked a woman with a samurai sword before dragging her down the street, ABC affiliate WFTS reports.

Police were called to the scene after receiving a 911 call informing them of a disturbance. When they arrived, they found Barber waving his arms and yelling. The female victim told authorities that he had hit her with the sword while it was still in its sheath, and afterward dropped the weapon and continued the assault.

According to the news source, the victim suffered injuries that backed up her story, and authorities determined she had been living with Barber, who was charged with aggravated domestic battery with a deadly weapon.

Individuals who are looking to prevent becoming the victim of a similar attack may want to buy pepper spray. Experts recommend practicing with the device to ensure that it is used correctly and to discharge the spray in an "x" or "z" patten for the most effective results.

Experts to host personal safety seminar in Michigan

Experts in Wyandotte, Michigan, are preparing to host a class that they hope will give people the tools to avoid being the victim of a physical attack. The Refuse to be a Victim seminar is part of an initiative headed by the National Rifle Association to improve personal safety and awareness, Wyandotte Patch reports.

The event is hosted by Lisa Orick-Martinez, a regional training counselor for the NRA. The lesson is beneficial to a wide breadth of people, organizers say, including teenagers, single people living alone and those who like to travel. The class will cover a number of areas including the psychology of criminals and personal safety devices.

"This workshop will give people techniques to make them less likely to be a victim or target of crime," Orick-Martinez told the news source. "We want people to be safe, but not terrified."

Citizens looking to boost their personal safety may want to purchase pepper spray. When discharged into the face of a potential attacker, the device will temporarily disable them and allow a victim to get to safety.

Maryland pit bull attack has residents questioning their safety

Debate is swirling in Maryland after a pit bull attack left a 7-year-old girl with serious facial injuries, and tensions are high between those who believe the animals are dangerous and others who think owner negligence is to blame. The owner of the dogs involved in the attacks may face criminal charges, ABC affiliate WMAR reports.

The young victim was injured by a pair of pit bulls while she was riding her bike, and experts say that the amount of force such animals can exhibit is substantial. Dr. Kim Hammond, who works at a local animal hospital, told the news outlet that they can apply nearly 500 pounds of pressure - something that poses a threat to young children.

Some people who have pit bulls believe that if they are cared for correctly, they do not pose any danger. While that may be partly true, Hammond tends to disagree that an owner's attention is the only factor at work.

"It's not just the owner. It is the owner plus the breed," she told the news source.

Individuals that live close to an aggressive dog may want to buy animal repellent or pepper spray. Such devices have proven effective in preventing injury sustained from an attack.

Awareness, preparedness key for spring break travel safety

As many high schools and college students across the United States take off on spring break trips, personal safety is of the utmost concern. Traveling in a foreign country certainly has its benefits, but experts warn not to ignore the importance of being aware of one's well-being while abroad. The Evansville Courier Press recently shared some travel safety tips for spring breakers.

There should be several precautions taken before students even leave. While it may seem like common sense, traveling lightly in terms of money and other valuables is recommended. Additionally, leaving pertinent travel information with someone at home, such as the location of the hotel and a rough itinerary, is good insurance should anything happen.

According to the news source, students should try to stay in groups of at least three while out and about. Additionally, awareness of one's surroundings is especially important.

Those looking for a way to boost their personal safety while on a trip may want to buy pepper spray. The device can be an effective deterrent against attackers, but travelers should follow all FAA guidelines while carrying it.

Attempted assault on bike path has police concerned

A woman in Belleville, Illinois, was attacked recently along a bike path near Southwestern Illinois College. The victim managed to get away unharmed but the assault has authorities wary of a repeat offense, Fox affiliate KTVI reports.

The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. while it was still light out. Investigators say the suspect came up from behind the victim and knocked her down before trying to get on top of her. She was able to fight him off and took off in the opposite direction to alert other people using the trail.

"Fortunately there were some other people on the bike path actually riding bicycles. They came to her assistance. They came up to her and the black male subject just ran off," Belleville police captain Don Sax told the news source.

Individuals who like to go running or jogging by themselves may want to buy pepper spray as an added personal safety measure. Experts suggest keeping it in an easy-to-reach location, so that if it ever has to be used, it can be grabbed quickly.

Boy needs 34 stitches after dog attack

A young boy in Hucknall, England, was seriously injured when a neighborhood dog attacked him. The 2-year-old required 34 stitches to close the wound on his face that was caused by a large Staffordshire bull terrier, the Hucknall Dispatch reports.

The incident occurred while the boy was playing at a neighbor's house, and he was rushed to the hospital soon after the attack. There were no witnesses so investigators are unsure of exactly how it started, but the dog's owners and the victim's parents are shocked because he had been around the animal numerous times before.

"We can't believe this has happened," the boy's father Brian Martin told the news source. "We have known our neighbors for three years and there have never been any problems with the dog before."

Individuals who come into contact with aggressive dogs may want to consider buying pepper spray as a defense mechanism. The device has proven to be an effective way to temporarily disable a canine.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours, and police were alerted of the assault around 3 a.m. Although the 52-year-old man was stabbed, he was treated and released from the hospital. Investigators have no leads or description of the attackers.

"He told an officer he was walking on North Lake Street when four men jumped him," Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain told the news source. "He was stabbed in the scuffle, but the attackers said nothing and took nothing from him."

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were more than 1.4 million cases of violent crime in the U.S. in 2009. Those looking to reduce the risk of being victims may want to consider carrying pepper spray. When discharged into the face of an attacker, it will make it difficult for them to see and breathe.

Iowa pet safety at the forefront after attacks

Few people know the importance of pet safety more than 74-year-old Tom Weinman. The Des Moines, Iowa, resident was walking his dog recently when a loose pit bull attacked it, and his pet suffered several bite wounds before the aggressive canine was restrained, the Des Moines Register reports.

The incident followed the death of a 3-year-old girl in Iowa and brings to light a significant issue when it comes to dog attacks. Weinman said that the incident came out of nowhere, but dog safety experts say that an animal can bite even if it does not appear to be angry.

"One of the major misconceptions is that if a dog is wagging its tail, it must be friendly. That is totally a fallacy," professional dog trainer Dana Fedman told the news source. She added that people like walkers and joggers should resist the urge to turn and run from a dog that appears to be aggressive and instead just stay still.

In addition to how one acts, carrying pepper spray as an animal repellent can be an added safety boost. When sprayed into the face of an animal, it will temporarily disable the aggressor without harming it.

Australian police offer personal safety tips

Police in Boondall, Australia, are urging residents to take appropriate steps to improve their personal safety while out and about. The initiative is led by Brisbane North crime prevention coordinator sergeant Leanne Eggins, who shared several tips with the public on how to stay safe, the Northside Chronicle reports.

Eggins said that one of the most effective ways to stay out of trouble is to project an appearance of confidence. Similarly, being aware of one's surroundings is ideal as it will prevent being taken by surprise. If possible, she recommends walking with a friend or animal companion. She also said that choosing where one walks is crucial.

"When out and about appear confident, self assured and comfortable in your surroundings through strong, positive body language," Eggins told the news source." Use well lit roads and paths where you are visible and where surrounding areas are visible to you and other people."

Residents may also want to buy pepper spray to serve as an added safety measure. Experts advise practicing with the device to ensure that if it never needs to be used, it is done correctly.

Chicago police searching for assault suspect

Massachusetts boy, 10, attacked by dog on walk home

A young boy in Fall River, Massachusetts, had to be taken to the hospital recently after he was bitten by a dog. The 10-year-old victim suffered injuries to his face and legs and was released after treatment, the Herald News reports.

Police say the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. while the boy was walking home from school with a group of friends. He told investigators that it was on his walk home that the canine broke through the fence in its backyard and began the attack.

Once the dog started biting the victim, passersby noticed the attack and attempted to help. One such bystander, Sandra Levesque, noticed what was happening as she was driving by. According to the news source, she assisted three men in dragging the aggressive animal off the youngster.

Whether you're a mail carrier or simply someone who lives near a large dog, pepper spray can serve as an effective animal repellent. The device has shown to be effective on attacking canines and makes it difficult for them to see and breathe.

Indiana woman released from hospital after home invasion

A woman from Columbus, Indiana, was recently released from the hospital after being the victim of a brutal home invasion that left her injured. Police are still searching for a suspect that allegedly attacked her with a crowbar while she and her two young children slept, The Republic reports.

According to authorities, the victim awoke to find herself seriously injured and called the police. The woman was then taken to the hospital and investigators determined that that her residence had been broken into and had some items stolen from it. According to the news source, not much is known regarding who the attacker was,ac and detectives are still searching for leads.

Those looking to improve their home safety can take several steps to do so. In addition to investing in a good home alarm system and a solid core door, experts suggest having a well-lit exterior so that there is no place for potential intruders to hide.

Those looking for an added boost may want to buy pepper spray. When sprayed into the face of an attacker, this device makes it difficult for them to see and breathe and can allow a victim to get to safety.

Georgia police looking for clues in sexual assault case

Police in DeKalb, Georgia, are on the hunt for a man who they believe sexually assaulted a woman at a local church recently. The suspect is believed to be 6-foot-2 and between 40 and 50 years old, Stone Mountain-Redan Patch reports.

The attack happened around 3:30 p.m. on February 26, but very little is known about the specific events. The victim, a 53-year-old woman, was working at the church when she opened the door for a man asking for help, who then beat, assaulted and robbed her. She was taken to the hospital and is currently improving, according to the news source.

The biggest lead in the case is the stolen cell phone that police believe the assailant stole from the victim and later sold. They are asking for information from those who may have been in the area of the church and witnessed anybody selling such merchandise.

Individuals looking for a way to boost their personal safety may want to buy pepper spray. Experts recommend practicing with the device ahead of time to ensure that it is used properly if the need ever arises.

Investigators probe dog attack on 3-year-old girl

The Department of Human Services has launched an investigation in the wake of a vicious dog attack in Iowa that left a 3-year-old girl dead. State officials are trying to determine whether the incident could have been prevented, and if not, who is to blame, ABC affiliate WOI-DT reports.

The attack happened when the victim was bitten by two Rottweilers who had broken free from an enclosure in the family's backyard. The dog's have since been put down, and the victim's mother, who was not home at the time of the attack, does not know how the canines escaped, according to the news source.

Those who live in the vicinity of notoriously aggressive dogs may want to take several steps to prevent being the victim of a similar attack. Experts say that if an individual is in such a situation, they should remain calm, resist the urge to run and assume a nonthreatening position to reduce the risk of being bitten.

However, when an attack seems unavoidable, an animal repellent such as pepper spray is the best option. When discharged into the face of an aggressive dog, the device will temporarily disable them and allow a potential victim to get to safety.

Police step up security in wake of jogger attack

Police in San Anselmo, California, are beefing up security after a woman was attacked while jogging along local roads. Authorities say the woman was forced to the ground and cut with a knife, and investigators are still looking for a suspect, according to the Ross Valley Reporter.

Police say that the victim, a 32-year-old woman, was running alongside Greenfield Avenue between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., when a man came up from behind her and demanded money. The news source reports that she told him she had none, at which point the attacker cut her with what is believed to be a small pocket knife.

Investigators have very little information to go on other than that the man was about six feet tall and had a deep voice. Officials have urged runners and walkers to take extra precaution when out alone, including staying in well-lit areas and increasing their awareness.

For those who like to go for a run alone, paying attention to personal safety is a must. One way to stay safe is to buy pepper spray, as the device has shown to be an effective way to disable a potential attacker.

Maryland police use pepper spray at rowdy concert

Police in Cambridge, Maryland, are looking into a shooting at concert that recently forced officers to use pepper spray. Investigators responded to the disturbance, but as they were leaving the scene a large scale fight broke out and the incident quickly escalated, The Star Democrat reports.

The initial call to the police occurred around 1:30 a.m. and was put in by a security staff member at the venue, who requested that one person be removed from the premises. Things came to a head as police were leaving and about 50 people became unruly and started throwing chairs and drinks at each other, which is when officers heard about 8 to 10 gunshots ring out.

As the fight began to grow, police on scene decided to call for back up and use pepper spray to quell the violence. The spray was effective and broke up the crowd and forced most of the people in the area to leave, according to the news source.

While pepper spray is often used by police as a non-lethal method of crowd control, private citizens may want to consider buying pepper spray as well. When used correctly, the device can bolster personal safety.

Investigators looking for pair of suspects in North Carolina home invasion

Police in Lincoln County, North Carolina, are looking for at least two men responsible for a recent home invasion. The four residents of the house were bound and tied while the suspects rummaged through the building, The Charlotte Observer reports.

Although the victims were not injured, the incident was a rather violent one. Police say that the men entered by kicking down the door and pointed guns at the family. At that point, they tied the victims' hands and legs and ended up taking cash before fleeing in the family's Dodge Durango - which was recovered about a half mile from the scene, according to the news source.

CNN reports there are a number of simple steps one can take to prevent such a home invasion. For instance, home safety experts advise against opening the door halfway with the chain latch still on as well as installing solid-core doors, heavy duty locks and window security systems.

In addition to taking preventative measures, homeowners may also want to consider buying pepper spray. Using the device against an attacker can temporarily disable him and allow a victim to get to safety.

Bizarre pig attack leaves man in hospital

A man from Wood County, Texas, recently had to be taken to the hospital after suffering a heart attack during a bizarre run-in with a neighborhood pet. Dan Turner and his family claim that their neighbor's potbellied big got loose and began attacking Turner, pinning him to a wall and biting him, CBS affiliate KYTX reports.

Although the Turners claim that it was Kyndall Wells' pet pig Tibby that is responsible, his owner is not so sure. In all the years that she has kept Tibby as a pet, the animal has never displayed any violent tendencies, and she thinks her neighbors may have confused him for something else.

"I think, honestly, if it was a pig that attacked him, it was an actual wild hog and he's blaming it on my pot-bellied pig," Wells told the news source.

While certainly not everyone is going to be the victim of a pig attack, similar incidents involving dogs are much more common. Individuals who live alongside an aggressive canine may want to buy pepper spray or another animal repellent. Such products can save a potential victim from injury and allow one to get to safety.

New York woman attacked during walk home

A woman was recently assaulted in Albany, New York, as she walked home alone after picking up a pizza. The attacker allegedly followed the victim home before forcing her into the building's foyer and then attacking her, the Times Union reports.

The incident began when the 20-year-old victim picked up her food at around 3:25 a.m., at which point the assailant began his pursuit. Once the victim returned to her residence, the man reportedly pushed her inside and began choking her. According to the news source, he demanded her wallet and began fishing for money.

It was while he was preoccupied with looking for cash that she was able to alert the authorities and the man took off running. Police are looking for a man in his 30s with long dreadlocks, the news provider reports.

Individuals who are looking for ways to boost their personal safety may want to buy pepper spray. When used correctly, the device can make it difficult for a potential assailant to see and breathe, allowing a victim to get to safety.

Parking lot attack leaves woman in critical condition

A 61-year old Maryland woman was in critical condition after she was attacked in a Macy's parking lot. Authorities say the victim was assaulted and robbed outside the store's entrance and that they are still searching for a suspect in the case, ABC affiliate WMAR reports.

Police believe that the woman was attacked around 6:30 p.m. and was knocked unconscious, but it was not until some time later that they were alerted about the incident. Originally her car was believed to be missing, but investigators were able to recover it.

Although authorities have yet to name a person of interest, Justin Mulcahy, a spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department told the news provider that "this investigation is still fluid but based on that information we believe it to be a robbery and an assault."

Individuals looking to reduce the risk of such an assault may want to take some safety precautions when walking in a parking lot. For starters, experts suggest to always carry keys and avoid talking on a cell phone. Additionally, pepper spray has proven to be an effective deterrent against an attacker.

Pepper spray takes down violent man in tire shop

A routine day at a Canadian tire shop turned violent recently when police had to be called in to deal with an unruly customer. Trouble began when a man in his 30s began threatening customers and responding officers, who had to use pepper spray to subdue the man, The Mississauga News reports.

The incident started around 6:45 p.m. when the employees called the police. When they arrived on the scene they noticed the customer acting erratically, and the situation took a turn for the worse when the man brandished a rock and said he would throw it at the authorities. It was at that point police knew they had to use pepper spray to quell the situation, according to the news source.

The device is one of the best non-lethal ways to subdue a potentially violent individual. When hit with the spray, people feel a burning sensation in their eyes, nose, mouth and skin because it targets the mucous membranes. The effects can last anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes.

While it is a commonly used device by police, ordinary citizens may want to buy pepper spray to boost their personal safety. However, be sure to check established laws for carrying as they tend to vary from state to state.

Family raises awareness after dog attack

Citizens of Peachtree City, Georgia, are warned to be vigilant after a local family's dog was attacked by a renegade black lab on a cart path recently. The dog, named Patches, needed more than 37 stitches to repair the wound on his side, The Citizen reports.

The attack occurred around 1 p.m. while Patches' family took him for a walk. Even though both Patches and the other animal were on leashes, the aggressive lab lunged forward and was able to knock him to the ground. According to the news provider, Patches' owner, Kevin Ellis, then took action and posted flyers around their neighborhood warning other residents about the dog that attacked their own.

"What really started gnawing at me is: what if I'm out there with the kids and our fishing poles, and the dogs got into it and the kids were in the middle of it?" Ellis told the news source.

Families who also live near an aggressive dog may want to consider buying pepper spray to defend themselves or boost their pet's safety. The device has been shown to make it difficult for animals to see and breathe and can prevent injury.

Garbagemen save the day in Florida pit bull attack

A pair of sanitation workers stumbled across a woman and her pet dog being attacked by a pit bull while out on the job recently, and managed to save her from further injury. Thanks to some fast action, the two men were able to subdue the animal and prevent it from inflicting any additional damage, the Macro Eagle reports.

The incident occurred in Marco Island, Florida, and began when the two men - Emilio Medal and Jorge Valdez - witnessed the attack at one of their regularly scheduled stops. They managed to pull the dog off the victim and secure it to a tree while they waited for animal control officials to arrive on the scene.

"Because of the quick thinking of these men, both the woman and her dog were spared more serious injuries," Officer Ed d’Alessandro said in a prepared statement.

According to Dogsbite.org, a website dedicated to preventing serious attacks, around 1,000 people in the United States are hospitalized each day due to injuries caused by dog attacks.

Individuals looking to protect themselves from such a fate may want to consider buying pepper spray. The device has proven to be an effective personal safety tool against dogs and humans alike.

Canadian woman assaulted while delivering newspapers

A woman in Saanich, British Columbia, was attacked recently as she was delivering newspapers. Local police are looking for a man who allegedly pulled her aside and attempted to assault her while she was on an early morning route with her husband, the Times-Colonist reports.

Investigators say the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. as the 29-year-old victim came out of a local driveway while helping her husband with his job. At that point, the man grabbed her, but she swung the flashlight at him several times and he ran off into the bushes. Although the victim was physically unharmed, she was emotionally shaken, according to the news source.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were around 1.4 million instances of violent crime in 2009. Whether one is a mail carrier, newspaper delivery person or simply likes to jog in the early morning hours, buying pepper spray is a great way to boost personal safety. However, experts suggest practicing with the device first to ensure it is used properly if the need ever arises.

Man uses piece of wood to fend off aggressive bobcat

A man in Grant-Valkaria, Florida, recently saved his wife and dog from serious injury after he beat back an attacking bobcat with a large piece of wood. Although the animal slunk into the woods after the attack, local officials are urging area residents to be on alert for potentially dangerous wildlife in the immediate future, CBS affiliate WTSP reports.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when the man, Rich Arnold, noticed his wife being attacked at the couple's mailbox. His wife suffered several bite wounds to the ankle before the bobcat turned its attention toward the Arnolds' small dog, which is when Rich decided to take action.

"I attacked it with a 4-by-4 and then a broom," he told the news source. Animal control officials say that the animal was likely infected with rabies or some other illness, so Arnold's wife had to receive shots for the disease in addition to stitches.

Individuals who live in the area of an aggressive animal or face the potential of such an attack may want to carry an animal repellent or pepper spray. The device has shown to make it difficult for some animals to see and breathe.

Bizarre beer bottle attack highlights home safety

Investigators in Point Arena, Florida, are looking into a bizarre incident where a woman was attacked right outside her door. Police say the victim was struck with a 40-ounce beer bottle and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, The Ukiah Daily Journal reports.

Authorities say that the incident began when the 22-year-old victim answered her door. Witnesses told responding officers the victim was immediately struck with the bottle by 20-year-old Veronica Lopez, who punched the woman several times before taking off in the opposite direction, according to the news source.

The victim had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance due to a large, four-inch cut on her head, and police were still looking for the attacker several days after the incident took place.

Those who are concerned about suffering a similar fate may want to take several steps to boost their home safety. For starters, not opening the door for unidentified people is crucial, and residents should make use of peep holes every time.

Additionally, buying peppers spray can be an effective route as well. Experts suggest practicing with the device to ensure it is used properly if the need ever arises.

WSU one of the best schools in country for personal safety

Washington State University has been one of the nation's leaders when it comes to providing students with a safe environment. Over the last several years, the school's police department has installed nearly 100 panic buttons to ensure that students do not have to worry about their personal safety, the Standard-Examiner reports.

Though the program began almost a decade ago, more than half of the buttons have been installed over the last few years. When the device is hit, it sends a signal to the school's police and could be useful in situations ranging from safety issues to health emergencies - officers will likely arrive in under three minutes.

"It's a way to give them security knowing they have options ... if they have an issue in their office," lieutenant Steve Hansen told the news source.

In addition to the buttons, WSU has also put other personal safety measures in place and offers a website with all of its plans listed on it, the news outlet reports.

College students who are looking for ways to defend themselves may want to buy pepper spray. Most campuses allow the carrying of the device, but students should check their school's policy beforehand.

Maryland police officer bit by pit bull near elementary school

A police officer in Baltimore County, Maryland, was recently attacked by a pit bull after responding to a routine call. The officer was alerted after receiving a complaint about two dogs running loose, The Towerlight reports.

Not soon after the officer arrived at the campus of elementary school Halstead Academy of Science and Arts the attack began. Police say that the man had just opened his door when one of a pair of dogs lunged at him, affording him very little time to prepare and protect himself.

"He got out of his car and before he could react, he was attacked by these dogs," lieutenant Robert McCollough told the news source. "One dog was captured and the second, a white female pit bull with an orange brown spot on her hind quarters, ran away from the scene."

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quailty, there has been a steady increase of hospitalizations due to dog bites recently, with an 86 percent rise from 1993 to 2008.

Those looking to protect themselves from an aggressive animal may want to consider buying pepper spray or other animal repellent. The device has been shown to be an effective way to turn back an aggressive canine.

Woman fights back attacker in Ohio parking lot

A woman in West Chester Township, Ohio, was recently attacked in a parking lot but managed to escape potential abduction. The victim was reaching into her backseat when the attack occurred, but police told the Middletown Journal that her quick-thinking action may have saved her from further harm.

The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. when the attacker grabbed the victim from behind and told her to be quiet. However, she was not about to go without a fight. The 21-year-old woman created a scene and the attacker fled in the opposite direction. Investigators said she made the right move.

"In this instance, it was the right option," sergeant Matt Trombragel told the news source. "She fought back, created a commotion and went for help. I think what spooked him is she took the offensive and fought back."

One of the most effective ways to fight back against an attacker is to use pepper spray. Experts suggest carrying the device in an easy-to-reach location, such as a keychain, so that it can be used quickly when needed.

Authorities searching for answers in brutal Indiana home invasion

Police in Columbus, Indiana, are still searching for a person they believe is responsible for a violent attack on a woman. The incident has officials looking for answers and local residents on edge regarding the possibility of another assault, Fox affiliate WXIN reports.

The victim was a 34-year-old woman, and police say that the assailant forced his or her way inside her home at some point overnight. The homeowner was beaten so badly that she became unconscious and had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. Amazingly, the victim's two children were home at the time and slept through the whole thing. The home invasion has caused neighbors to fear for their safety.

"I've got grandkids playing over here all of the time and it's kind of scary for sure," Benny Shipley told the news source.

Buying pepper spray can be a good decision for those looking to boost home or personal safety. When sprayed into the face of an attacker, the device can make it hard for them to see and breathe, which will keep a potential victim out of harm's way.

Pit bull wounds animal shelter worker in Florida

A pit bull in Escambia County, Florida, that was brought in and quarantined for vicious behavior, recently attacked an animal control officer. The victim had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, and the animal is expected to remain in seclusion for at least 10 days, the Pensacola News Journal reports.

The animal was labeled dangerous and vicious by the Escambia County Animal Shelter, but was being released to its owner when the attack occurred. The dog's owner was attempting to muzzle her pet when it broke free and attacked 31-year-old Kathryn Sessions.

This incident highlights the threat posed by aggressive pit bulls. According to Dogsbite.org, a survey by the website found that of the 88 deaths caused by dog bites in a three year span, 59 percent were connected to pit bulls.

Runners, walkers or families with young children may want to take measures to prevent a similar attack from occurring. Pepper spray has shown to be an effective animal repellent and can turn back an aggressive canine.

England woman suffers unprovoked attack

A woman in Woodley, England, was attacked recently while she stood waiting for an elevator. Police say the assault was completely unprovoked, and although the incident left the victim relatively uninjured, The Wokingham Times reports that she was very emotionally shaken after the encounter.

The 27-year-old woman was standing by herself when the female attacker approached. She immediately began punching and shouting at the victim, and took off after the assault. Police are still searching for the woman and are asking anybody who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

"There were people around at the time and I believe someone must have heard or seen something," police officer Jen Cooney told the news source.

Pepper spray can be an effective way to boost personal safety for those who are concerned about suffering a similar fate. Experts recommend carrying the device in an easy-to-reach location, such as a keychain, so that it can be taken out quickly if necessary.

Authorities pick up suspect in Vermont attack

Police recently arrested a man in Hudson, New York, who is suspected of attacking his former girlfriend while the pair were in Vermont. The 21-year-old alleged assailant is believed to be responsible for holding his ex-girlfriend at knife point after breaking into her apartment, the Times Union reports.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when police say that he forced his way into her residence. The victim told police that he told her that if she came with him she would not get hurt, but she fought back against the assault.

According to the news source, investigators said that the man began to choke and beat the victim, but she was able to escape during the fight by using a side door and by alerting police. It was then that local authorities in Vermont told New York officers about his whereabouts, and they picked him up at his house.

Individuals who are looking to prevent a similar attack may want to buy pepper spray. When discharged into the face of an assailant, the device makes it difficult for them to see and breathe, temporarily disabling them.
