Police in Corpus Christi, Texas, are investigating a mysterious home invasion that left a couple unconscious and curious for answers. The residents had a number of undisclosed personal belongings stolen from their house, CBS affiliate KZTV reports.
The home invasion occurred when an intruder knocked on the door around midnight. When the door was answered, the robber struck both the residents in the head with a shotgun, and neither of them woke up until the following day.
"It's possible that the male victim knew the subject, and he forced entry after that and was assaulted with a shotgun," Lieutenant Anthony Sanders told the news source.
There are a number of steps homeowners can take to prevent such an attack. Keeping the entrance to one’s home well-lit and not answering the door for an unidentified individual will help safeguard home security.
Additionally, carrying pepper spray can bolster one’s home safety as the device is able to temporarily disable a potential attacker. Experts suggest practicing with the device to ensure it is used correctly if the need ever arises.
