Whether fair or not, pit bulls often have a reputation as being among the most vicious dogs around. A judge in Augusta, Maine, made the designation official for a pair of dogs to quell the fears of some other individuals in the area, the Portland Press Herald reports
The decision makes it so that two dogs, Jackman and Hebron, must be kept confined at all times or walked on a very short and strong leash, according to the news source. In addition to a fine, the ruling comes in the wake of an attack on a local llama by the two dogs that left area residents afraid of similar incidents causing harm to their pets, or themselves.
"It's peace of mind that the owner has to actively contain the animals," Monmouth, Maine, resident Nancy Smith, told the news provider. "Let's take this as a warning."
For other individuals who are concerned about being the victim of a dog attack, pepper spray can be an effective defense mechanism. The device has shown to be an effective way to disable an aggressive dog and can make it difficult for them to see and breathe.
