A woman who was jogging in Ionia, Michigan, recently was seriously injured when a a trio of pit bulls attacked her. The victim was jogging along the sidewalk when the animals saw her and began the onslaught, the Sentinel-Standard reports.
The woman was taken to the hospital soon after the incident but was released. The dogs' owners has been cited for not controlling his animals, and the animals may be euthanized. Still, she suffered serious injuries over a significant portion of her body, and officials say that they are stumped as to why the dogs attacked in the first place.
"The woman received injuries on both legs and her backside," chief animal control officer Gordon Douglas told the news source. "It was completely unforeseen."
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the number of hospitalizations due to dog bites has been on the rise over the last 15 years. Experts say one of the best ways to protect against such an attack is to carry pepper spray, which has proven to be an effective way to temporarily disable an aggressive dog.
