If you're traveling to an unfamiliar destination, you should never talk to strangers, especially if you're walking alone as you may make yourself an easier target by proving you don't know the area. Carrying pepper spray with you may be another way to stay safe while traveling as the mechanism will work to blind your attacker, giving you adequate time to get away.
